Fusebox Design Contest Winner

We received 25 entries to the Fusebox Design Contest. Entries were submitted not only from the US, but from the UK, Hungary and Singapore! We would like to thank everyone who submitted and congratulate everyone on the quality of the submittals.

After careful consideration of each design, 5 designs were chosen by the Fusebox.org Website Volunteers to go to Team Fusebox for a final vote. These 5 designs were then rated and discussed amongst Team Fusebox and it was a close decision. Any of the top 5 designs would have been a good public face for Fusebox.org.

The top design that will become the public face of Fusebox.org was designed by Lydia Dugger! You can see the two designs at

Lydia has created a beautiful and effective design and we will be working hard to translate this into our new site.

She has also won:

Attribution in the form of a "Site designed by:" with corresponding link on the footer of the home page.
2 free passes to CFObjective held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 3 - 6, 2007, (courtesy of Jared Rypka-Hauer)
1 free pass donated by Teratech, (courtesy of Michael Smith) to CFUNITED held in Bethesda, Maryland, June 27 - 30, 2007.

Congratulations Lydia! and thanks to everyone on both the Website Volunteers and Team Fusebox who worked so hard on this contest

FuseBox Web Design Contest Ends March 8th.

I'm very excited about the Fusebox Web Design Contest. So far we have 8 entries with at least two more submittals that I know of.
The quality of the submittals is extremely high and I'm very pleased that one of these entries will be the new look for Fusebox.

Its going to be tough to narrow the field to the 5 entries that Team Fusebox will choose from, but I know that the website volunteers are going to be well up to that challenge.

Remember that there are prizes for the winner including:

2 Tickets for CFObjective, May 3 - 6, 2007 in Minneapolis, MN (courtesy of Jared Rypka-Hauer)
1 Ticket for CFUNITED, June 27 - 30, 2007 in North Bethesda, MD (courtesy of Michael Smith)
A link to your web site and a "Designed By" on the Home page of the new Fusebox Web Site.

There's still time for you to get your designs in. See http://trac.fuseboxframework.org/fusebox/wiki/WebSiteDesignRequirements for the design requirements and a look at the sites already submitted!

Contest Submittals must be in on March 8th, 2007 at 5pm EST. Contest winner will be announced on March 29, 2007.

Fusebox Web Site Design Contest Announced

Fusebox is going to get a facelift and we need your help.
Things are really starting to happen within Team Fusebox and one of the main goals is to start off fresh with a new and improved website. New content, new everything. Including a new look.
Since for the most part, we are programmers and not designers, we need your help. So we are announcing the first ever Fusebox Website design contest.

Site submittals will close on March 8, 2007, 5pm EST. Submittals after this time will not be accepted.
A winner will be announced on March 29, 2007.

Interested? head over to http://trac.fuseboxframework.org/fusebox/wiki/WebSiteDesignRequirements for the complete set of rules, design requirements and submittal information.

What do you get out of it? You mean besides the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from contributing to the community? Isn't that enough? No? Well then how about:

2 Free passes to CFOBjective , held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 3 - 6, 2007 (courtesy of Jared Rypka-Hauer)
1 Free pass to CFUNITED, held in Bethesda, Maryland, June 27 - 30, 2007 (courtesy of Michael Smith of Teratech)

Feel free to blog this or put this on other sites. The more response we get to this, the better the site will be.

Fusebox Happenings.

Believe it or not we are starting to see a lot of backstage work within Team Fusebox. Michael Smith of Teratech held a Team Fusebox
meeting at the conference and a lot got done.

Team Fusebox itself will be leading groups of volunteers to help with stuff that needs to happen. This means that the focus (as it should be)
is on the community itself to bring new life into Fusebox. There are areas for all community members of varying degrees of expertise.
To check out the various areas, go to the Trac Site at http://trac.fuseboxframework.org/fusebox/wiki/TeamFusebox .

Fusebox News

Hot off the presses of Hal Helm's Occasional Newsletter:

In recent years, John Quarto-vonTivadar and I have been the "custodians" of Fusebox. As of today, I'm very happy to announce we're given that trust to TeraTech (www.teratech.com). Michael Smith, CEO, has been a long advocate and contributor to Fusebox and will now hold the reins. John and I will be helping as time allows, but feel certain Michael will do a great job. Special thanks are also due to Sean Corfield and his team of developers who built Fusebox 5.

I spoke with Michael last week (as did many people who have been involved with Fusebox over the years) and I must say that I am pleased with this latest direction. While Fusebox has evolved technically over the years (and the latest release Fusebox 5 done by Sean Corfield is a great leap forward), its community reach has stagnated. I'm hopeful that with this new iteration, that fresh ideas and community involvement will become the norm again.

Some things I mentioned to Michael that I want to see:

	Better and more documentation
More places for articles, plugins, etc.
More ways for the community to become involved.

I also want to have Teratech re-explore the forums and list-servs. Currently, there are about 4-5 separate yahoo groups that are all Fusebox related. Also the forums don't push email even though the forum software allow for this. I'd love to see the forums/list-servs all grouped together so that there is one place to go and people can get the posts in the way that best suits them.

Its a positive step forward. Many people have worked to get Fusebox where it is, Gabe Rothman, Steve Nelson, Nat Papovich, Erik Voldengen, Rey Muradez, Brian Kotek, Brian LeRoux, John Beynon, Michael Dinowitz, Sean Corfield and more. Of course John Quarto-vonTividar and Hal Helms in the last iteration. One of the wonderous things about Fusebox is the fact that it has never been dependant on one person or a few people. When people bow out for whatever reasons, others come in to keep it going. I see this as a strength of Fusebox and the fact that you can't keep a good framework down.

I'm hopeful that a lot of changes some of us have been promoting behind the scenes, come to fruition soon. I promise to help in any way I can and to also advocate for greater community involvement.

Now running on FB5

I just moved my web site over to Fusebox 5. Its something I've been wanting to do for a long time, but I haven't had the time prior to today to test it. It seems to be running faster than my FB4.1 code base. I had to make some minor changes to my code (specifically cause I was using application.fusebox.mode in a lot of places to determine if errors get thrown or emailed). I had to change all of those to myfusebox.getApplication().mode to accomodate the fact that I put in FUSEBOX_APPLICATION_KEY (thereby being able to accomodate multiple fb apps in one program.)

I didn't have to do that, but I wanted to test my fbsecure plugin (yes, it needs to be updated, and the new code will be up next week).

My first thoughts on moving it? Well if you don't use an application.fusebox variable in your code (and most people don't), then it should be pretty easy. It seems to be much faster in production mode as well. (But, remember in development mode to turn off your trace debugging in CFAdmin).

Running a Fusebox 4 program on both CF5 and CFMX

Maybe I have a unique situation, maybe not. I am writing a fusebox 4 application which must run under both CF5 and CFMX (client is on CF5 right now, and will be switching to CFMX in the future, but needs the program running now). Also they can't tell me when it will be switched, but they need the program to run no matter what happens to the server. I created a new index.cfm file which allows the program itself to pick the core files it will run under. Works great. The core files for both CF5 and CFMX can be found at Fusebox.org.
