RDS in Eclipse on Vista

Since the ColdFusion Install on Vista is a bit more manual than we are used to, the RDS plugin in Eclipse will not connect to any servers. The error I received is a "HTTP 404: Error Not Found".

In order to get around this, create a "main" subdirectory in your "webroot"/CFIDE directory and add a blank "ide.cfm" file in there.

Vista and Configurations

One of my big purchases planned for this year has been a new laptop. My current one, which is also my desktop, is over 3 years old and is showing its age. The work I am doing is ranging from coding and architecture to accessibility auditing and has necessitated having anywhere from 8-12 programs/windows running at a time.

I ordered and received a Dell Latitude 820 last week. I ordered it with a 2.16 Dual Core Processor, a whopping 4GB of memory and 100Gb Hard Drive. Why you ask? Because I also decided to get it installed with Windows Vista Business Edition and my experience with Microsoft Windows OS's is the more processor speed and RAM the better. I was also trying to rectify some mistakes I made the last time I ordered a laptop from Dell. One was I only bought 1GB of RAM last time even though the computer was expandable to 2GB. I thought I would eventually upgrade, but never did. The last time I ordered, Windows XP had recently come out and I thought I would stick with my tried and true Windows 2000 Pro OS. The problem with that of course is that when I did decide to go XP, I had to purchase the OS separately.

CF 8 Wishlist - An IDE with Accessibility Added

I haven't paid that much attention to the CF8 wishlist, but Rob Brooks-Bilson posted an entry this morning regarding the manner in which the data for the poll was analyzed. Within his blog, he posted some raw numbers of the items people wanted/really wanted (4 or 5) on the scale to see in ColdFusion 8. And I saw something that surprised me.

Out of 317 responses (and this was a multiple choice poll, meaning you could choose more than one thing that you wanted), 77 people put down that they wanted Adobe to put an accessibility checker into the IDE. I thought about this after I read it and I have some thoughts I wanted to share.

Live at CFUNITED, Tim Buntel appears back onstage during the Keynote. He has accepted a new position at Adobe, Product Marketing Manager for ColdFusion. Marketing? Who cares about the title? Tim is back!

Other happenings. a new updater for Coldfusion is up at Adobe. Fusebox 5 RC1 is released. Great sessions, lots and lots of people.
Connectivitiy is not great, even up in the rooms. I guess there are more people on the network, then the hotel is really able to handle. Hope they fix it soon.
More later, I have to get ready for my presentation.

An Ethical Conundrum

Last week, I was in Hartford, CT doing some CSS Training. (The class went really well by the way). While I was up there, I spoke to the local user group run by Jeffrey Houser. I know Jeffrey slightly from conferences where we both spoke and he and I ended up going to dinner on Thursday, where we ended up discussing Adobe, ColdFusion, general business practices and the CFUNITED conference.

Earlier in the week, Jeffrey had decided to pull out of the conference where we were both slated to speak. You can read his reasoning at his blog post . Specifically, his reasoning involved the fact that Teratech had begun to sell the audio recordings of last years conference and has plans to produce and sell video from the conference to be held this year. Jeffrey's concerns when we spoke mainly had to do with control. He is a musician and as such, the quality of recordings of his voice and materials seemed to be his main focus in our discussion.

As Jeffrey pointed out in his blog posting, starting with the 2005 CFUNITED conference (which was a bigger and much more professionally run conference than the previous CFUN conferences), speakers were required to agree to a speakers' agreement which included the following:

Eclipse and Working Sets - What a great idea!

Adobe CF Tech Note CFQUERY, CFSTOREDPROC maxrows behavior

The maxrows attribute in cfquery and cfstoredproc has not been honored in the way that I, at least thought it was.
Not great news to me since I have used it consistently since at least ColdFusion 4.0 to try to limit the hit on my database at times. Apparently, rather
than simply retrieving the maximum number of rows you specified, ColdFusion retrieved all the rows from the query and then discarded all but the maximum number of rows before returning the query set. The result? You get the correct number of records for your query result set, but the database takes a hit since it has to return all the records.

Adobe RDS Plugin and Query Builder Problem

The new RDS plugin from Adobe is the bomb. It brings all the functionality I loved from Homesite and put it into Eclipse. The only problem I had with it is that at first the RDS query viewer didn't work correctly.

The problem can be traced to an install of the MyEclipse plugin. Once I disabled MyEclipse, the query viewer worked really well. However, I didn't want to lose other functionality that MyEclipse gives me so the trick was to uninstall the MyEclipse plugin, verify that the RDS plugin still worked and then install MyEclipse again. Apparently having MyEclipse install after the RDS plugin fixes the problem. My question of course is what happens when the next RDS version is ready to go? I really don't want to have to uninstall and reinstall MyEclipse each and everytime.

You can find the RDS Plugin at http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=labs#flexbuilder2. Note you will have to login to Macromedia to download it. Click on the Flex Builder link and then "Download ColdFusion Extensions to Flex Builder 2.0". Unzip into Eclipse, restart and you are done.

For more information on MyEclipse ($29.99 a year for a standard subscription), go to the MyEclipse website.

This issue affects CFMX and Jrun 4.0 servers using web services. It does not affect CF 5 and under

ColdFusion MX and JRun 4.0 web services may be vulnerable

ColdFusion Version 5 and earlier versions and JRun 3.1 and
earlier versions do not support web services and are not
